Kilimanjaro Charity Climb

Kilimanjaro Young Girls in Need runs a vocational center and nursery school for girls. The vocational center works to provide the girls with culinary or sewing skills and helps them find employment, while the nursery school works to prepare young girls for entry into primary school. KYGN also provides nutritional aid, medical care and counseling, has a sponsorship program to finance primary and secondary education, and works to create safer home environments for their students.

I am asking for donations to support my participation in Climb for Kilimanjaro to help KYGN in their mission to help local girls. Please consider supporting me in this effort! The money I raise will be used to purchase sewing machines for seamstress training, ovens for baking training, computers for IT training, hair saloon equipment for hairstylist training, books for English classes, or a bus to transport the girls to the center.  I hope you'll visit my blog often, so that you can see how my fundraising efforts are going. I’ll keep you posted on my success!

I have committed to raise at least $2,000. If you would like to support me please send donations to me, and I will forward them KYGN. Any amount, however big or small, will make an impact on the lives of these girls. You can take the time to learn more about this worthy organization by visiting their website at www.kygn.org.

Summit Africa

African Scenic Safaris is a safari company based in Moshi will be leading the trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft)

I will be climbing the Machame Route  (6 days ~approx 50 miles)

Of the Kilimanjaro routes, the Machame route is the most popular. It is the route of choice because it provides spectacular views and a variety of habitats. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of the mountain, within its lush, fertile rain forest. The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows Mweka trail.
Day 1 :
Be met by your head guide and drive to the Machame gate (about 45min.). After registration, start climbing along a clear trail through plantation and natural forest, thereafter a narrow forest path follows to the Machame hut (9,900ft).  Approx 5-6 hours of walking today.

Day 2:
Breakfast, ascending through the forest, steep ridge passing through heather and open moorlands, and crossing a large gorge to Shira hut (12,600ft).  Approx 5-6 hours of walking today.

Day 3:
After breakfast, we will ascend to Lava tower (15,180ft) with lunch on the way to Baranco, then descend slowly to Baranco campsite (12,850ft) for dinner and overnight.  Approx 5-7 hours of walking today.

Day 4:
After breakfast, we leave Baranco hut for Barafu hut (14,910ft). We will pass through the last water drop at Karanga valley on the way up. Spend a few hours sleeping at Barafu campsite before waking up to summit.  Approx 6-7 hours of walking today.

Day 5: Summit day
Wake up at midnight, and after a small snack, start ascending to Uhuru Peak through the Stella point (18,640ft), then after reaching the summit, we will head down to Mweka camp.  Approx 6-7 to Uhuru Peak and then 4-5 hours to Mweka camp.

Day 6:
After breakfast, we will head down to Mweka gate with lunch packet, and the waiting vehicle will take you back to Moshi.  Approx 3-4 hours of walking today.
