The great stupa of Boudhanath is located only a few miles outside center of Kathmandu. Boudhanath (or Boudha meaning lord of wisdom) is a protective, purifying and wish-granting stupa, a store of scared energy. It is one of the most important place of pilgrimage for the Buddhist. In the past, when the trade routes to central and western Tibet were fully open, traders, pilgrims and travelers sought blessings at the stupa for safe passage over the mountain passes and gave thanks to it upon arriving to Kathmandu valley. It is one of the largest and most significant Buddhist monuments in the world.
